Born and brought up in Kolkata, India, Sajal Sarkar graduated in Painting from Govt. College of Art and Craft, Kolkata 1989. He was associated  with Anandabazar Patrika, a leading Bengali newspaper, as an illustrator in kids weekly. He taught art to the differently abled kids at Spastics Society of Eastern India, Kolkata in 1990 and was also a regular contributor with illustrations in little magazines and various children books.

Sajal moved to Baroda, in the western region of India, to learn and study printmaking at M S University of Baroda and completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Printmaking in 1995. In 1996, he was awarded a grant from Elizabeth Greenshields foundation, Canada .Within a few years of art practice, he got some more recognition through research fellowship, grants and some international exposures. Sajal had a solo show in AICON gallery of New York in 2007, a second grant from Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, Canada in 2005 and a number of shows in India and internationally, including Print Triennial of Chamelieres, France. He attended a lot of art workshops and residencies both for painting and printmaking in India and abroad. One of Sajal’s etching print has found a place in the collection of Library of Congress, Washington D.C., in their prints and photography section. In the year 2012, he was awarded the Senior Research Fellowship and a sculptural project was approved by the Cultural Ministry of India. His works are in collection with the National Gallery of Modern Art and Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi along with several private collections internationally.

 

Sajal was associated with various art schools in India and specially with the Painting and Printmaking dept. for more than 20 years at Faculty of Fine Arts, M S University of Baroda ,India as an external jury member and played a major role for co-curricular programs such as art workshops and artist portfolio. He now works as an Art Instructor at Visual Art Center of New Jersey, Summit.
